Corrosion Prevention

Polyisobutene in the Corrosion Prevention Industry

Polyisobutene has revolutionised industries that require corrosion prevention to function while protecting and prolonging the lifespan of their assets that are susceptible to rust and decay.  The corrosion of assets can lead to significant economic losses, severe asset failures, safety hazards and downtime.

Polyisobutene acts as a protective layer, stopping moisture, oxygen and chemicals from reaching the substrate.  It has a strong adhesion factor which contributes to inhibiting unwanted substances from reaching the substrate.   Contributing to PIBs ability to consistently protect the substrate is its flexibility and non-curing abilities, allowing for maintained protection even in environments experiencing dynamic stress.

A particularly special ability of visco-elastic pure Polyisobutene is its self-healing property.  Particularly useful on substrates in harsh environments of mechanical damage.  The self-healing is due to PIBs molecular structure, non-curing soft nature and strong adhesion to the substrate and itself, creating an effective seal.

Polyisobutene technology ensures effective corrosion protection over the lifetime of the applied surfaces by not crosslinking and by not aging or deteriorating over time.

Properties of PIB Contributing to Corrosion Prevention

  • Chemical resistance, it is chemically inert and resistant to most aqueous, alkalis and acidic solutions.
  • Temperature resistant, it maintains its integrity in various temperature ranges.
  • Versatile, can be used in different grades and forms to allow for easy application to any substrate, may it be pipelines, tanks, pylons and marine structures.
  • Non-crosslinking and does not age or deteriorate. Contributing to long lasting protection of the substrate. Does not cure or crack over time or stress.
  • Adheres to the substrate at a molecular level resulting in zero under creep and zero cathodic disbondment.
  • Minimal surface preparation required before applying Polyisobutene to the substrate.

The purpose of Polyisobutene in Corrosion Prevention

  • Acts as a protective barrier, shield surfaces from corrosion caused by environmental factors, moisture and chemical exposure.
  • It has a tight matrix in its molecular structure that creates an effective seal, preventing leaks and maintaining integrity.  This factor also makes it water-repellent which is excellent in waterproofing applications.
  • Polyisobutene encourages water displacement from metal surfaces, preventing moisture from oxidising the metal.
  • Instant adhesion to the surface and the fact that Polyisobutene does no cure, meaning protection from corrosion from application to long lasting protection.  PIB will not cure, crack or disbond with appropriate surface preparation and application.
  • Self-healing and non-curing, PIB maintains its viscous nature long-term and allows for minor damages to self-heal. This increases the lifespan of the coating and asset; and reduces the frequency of maintenance requirements.
